Our Social Responsibility and Sustainability Initiatives

Tracking
Emissions

Tracking Emissions

NWS is currently using the GreenPlaces Environmental Management system to measure and track the company’s footprint including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. In 2023, NWS will have more visibility into real time emissions data through utility tracking.

Equipment Recycling Service

Equipment Recycling Service

Processing returned equipment can be an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. NWS’ reverse logistics capabilities ensure that your returned equipment is taken care of – whether it needs to be returned to the origin, scrapped or repacked and replaced as stock.

100% Powered by Renewables

100% Powered by Renewables

NWS is purchasing renewable energy credits and upgrading to 100% renewable energy in order to eliminate our Scope 2 (electricity) emissions (~280 mT).

Offset Scope
1 Emissions

Offset Scope 1 Emissions

NWS has offset 100% of Scope 1 emissions (302 mT) through investments in verified carbon negative projects, effectively taking action against emissions from essential business operations that can’t be eliminated

NWS's ESG Program

NWS ESG Policy

In 2022, NWS began developing a formalized ESG program by: conducting a structured materiality survey to confirm priorities and assessing current programs through a policy gap analysis and developing a suite of updated policies to adopt.

No Plastic Water Bottles

no_water_bottles

Of the ~29 million plastic water bottles Americans purchase each year, only about 1 in 6 of them are properly recycled, NWS is a plastic water bottle-free workplace.

Printing Efficiencies

printing efficiencies

NWS is investing in more sustainable printing practices that not only lowers environmental impact, but also reduces operating costs. Printing efficiencies include using less ink, investing in refabricated cartridges and recycled or compostable paper

Projects We Support

At NWS, we believe that sustainability is every company’s responsibility and we’re proud to be 100% powered by renewable energy. In addition to investing in renewable energy credits (RECs) to eliminate our Scope 2 emissions and offsetting our Scope 1 emissions, NWS’s sustainability program is designed to measure, track, and reduce our annual carbon footprint through strategic initiatives in partnership with GreenPlaces.

To date, NWS has eliminated 280 metric tons of carbon emissions through RECs, and offset an additional 302 metric tons by investing in verified environmental projects around the globe that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, including:

THERM Advanced
Refrigeration

Therm is committed to monetizing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions that are both efficient and cost-effective. It is Therm’s goal to make climate-friendly technology decisions cost-competitive for both neighborhood businesses and larger corporations. Therm brings together a team with rich industry backgrounds in HVAC/R, energy efficiency, facilities management, and cooling technology. They are experienced in this space and know that changes don’t happen overnight. With more than 10 patents, their engineering team is full of relentless innovators.

Phlogiston
Phase I

This project reduces GHG emissions by enhancing existing controls at an adipic acid plant to increase N₂O destruction beyond baseline levels. Previously, exhaust was routed to either a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit—ineffective for N₂O—or a less effective Thermal Reduction Unit (TRU). To meet Clean Air Act Title V permit requirements, the SCR operated much of the year. Phase I involves installing a new absorption column at Ascend Performance Materials to convert NOx to nitric acid. This allows more exhaust to be routed to the TRU, increasing overall N₂O destruction.
